From historic aircraft and Boeing jets to helicopters. Kilian has completed his first solo! 🚁

Kilian is certainly no newcomer to aviation. Over the course of his flying career so far, he has gained experience on a remarkably diverse range of aircraft – from historic aeroplanes and gliders to Boeing airliners. Nevertheless, he decided to broaden his flying horizons with another fascinating discipline: flying helicopters and obtaining a PPL(H) licence.
Although flying a helicopter differs from piloting an aeroplane in many respects, Kilian’s extensive aviation experience was clearly evident throughout his training. Good flying habits, spatial awareness, anticipation and sound decision-making are valuable skills, regardless of how many wings or rotors an aircraft has.
However, a helicopter can present new challenges even to an experienced pilot. Mastering the hover, coordinating the controls and handling the aircraft precisely all require a somewhat different approach from the one aeroplane pilots are used to.
A first solo flight is therefore a significant moment even for a pilot with hundreds or thousands of hours in the cockpits of other aircraft. It is the moment when the instructor remains on the ground and the pilot takes full responsibility for the helicopter for the first time.
Kilian, congratulations on a fantastic achievement! We are delighted that you chose LION Helicopters for your journey into the world of helicopters, and we look forward to more flights together and to supporting you as you continue your training towards a PPL(H). 🚁
Are you also considering expanding your flying qualifications from aeroplanes to helicopters? At LION Helicopters, we are delighted to welcome both experienced pilots and complete beginners. We tailor training to each student’s individual experience, abilities and availability.
