First steps of a helicopter pilot

Thinking about learning to fly a helicopter but not sure where to start? We have written down 5 concrete steps that will take you from first interest all the way to starting PPL(H) training on the Guimbal Cabri G2.

1. Try a discovery flight

Not sure whether a helicopter is right for you? And whether LionHeli is the right school? Come for a discovery flight with an instructor. You will try the basic controls yourself and see how you feel at the controls. If you then start training, the hour counts towards your flight time — it is not wasted money.

2. Sort out financing for training

Helicopter pilot training is not cheap. Before you jump in, be clear about your budget — own funds, a loan or a combination of both. We have prepared a transparent cost breakdown for PPL(H) and CPL(H) including the hidden items, so you know what to expect.

3. Book a medical examination

Every pilot must be in good physical shape. Common health limitations (e.g. glasses) are usually not an obstacle for private flying — for PPL(H) you need a Class 2 medical, for CPL(H) Class 1. We recommend doing the medical before signing the training contract, to avoid unnecessary delays.

4. Submit a training application

Fill in a non-binding enquiry, we will arrange a personal meeting, walk through the training plan together and sign a contract. We deliver training in an individual format — we adjust it to your schedule, whether you are a student, employee or a business owner with a tight calendar.

5. Start your PPL(H) training

Now nothing is stopping you. Training kicks off with theory preparation and, in parallel, the first hours in the Cabri G2 cockpit. We keep a steady tempo — determined students who do not interrupt training can obtain the PPL(H) licence within a matter of months.

Frequently asked questions

What prerequisites do I need to start?

You must be at least 16 for your first solo flight and 17 for the PPL(H) licence to be issued. You need a valid Class 2 medical certificate and the ability to communicate in English (radio communication in English is part of training).

How long does PPL(H) training take?

The legislative minimum is 45 flight hours plus 9 theory subjects. For motivated students who fly regularly, training takes about 4–6 months. If you fly only at weekends, expect 9–18 months.

Do I need to have all the money ready at the start?

No. With us you pay as you go — per individual flight hours and training phases. We bill only actual flight minutes, so you keep precise control over how much you spend.

Where does the training take place?

We fly from Hradec Králové airport (LKHK). Theory lessons are delivered individually at the airport or, by agreement, online.
